About TerraFirma
The people on your side of the table.
TerraFirma is a deliberately small firm built on one conviction: people making the move into retirement deserve an advisor with nothing to sell and no one else to answer to. Here is who we are and why we work this way.
The Firm
Built small, on purpose.
Terra firma means solid ground. It is the feeling a family should have about their financial life, especially in the years when a paycheck no longer arrives to smooth over mistakes. The firm exists to provide exactly that: a plan you can stand on, and a steady hand when everything else is moving.
Two structural choices make that possible. We are fee-only. Our clients pay us and no one else does. No commissions, no referral fees, no product quotas hiding behind the advice. And we cap the number of families we serve. Real planning takes real attention, and attention doesn’t scale. When we reach capacity, we pause new relationships rather than dilute existing ones. Most firms grow by adding clients. We grow by knowing ours better.
Everything else rests on those two decisions: the retirement work, the tax planning, the estate and inheritance guidance. They are why a client can trust that when we recommend something, the only reason is that we believe it is right.
Principal, Wealth Advisor
Jason G. Fang, CFP®
- 19+ yearsSince 2006 advising individuals and families
- CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®
- USC MarshallB.S. Business Administration, real estate finance
- Walnut Creek, CAServing the East Bay and beyond
Jason began advising in November 2006, which means his career was barely two years old when the financial world came apart. He spent 2008 and 2009 on the phone. Not selling anything, just helping frightened families avoid turning a temporary decline into a permanent loss. That experience settled early what this work actually is: protecting people from the handful of moments that can unmake a plan. The principles TerraFirma runs on today were learned there, in real time: faith in the future, patience, and discipline.
He spent the years that followed inside large national advisory firms, earning the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification along the way and rising to direct financial planning for one of them. In 2024 he founded TerraFirma around a simple idea: serve fewer families, and serve them completely. As a fee-only fiduciary, he is paid by clients and only by clients. When he sits on your side of the table, it is because that is the only side he has ever been paid to sit on.
His deepest specialty is the transition into retirement itself. Every transition is different, and each one is a puzzle he enjoys solving: when to step away, how to replace the paycheck, what to do about health coverage, what the first few years should actually look like. There is an emotional side to it too, and he considers it a privilege to walk alongside people as they make one of the biggest and most exciting leaps of their lives.
He is just as passionate about what happens when wealth changes hands, because it is the part families are least prepared for. He has watched well-funded estates create confusion where they were meant to create gratitude: a beneficiary form that overrode the will, an inherited IRA drained by avoidable taxes, heirs who were handed money but never handed context. Digital assets have added a new layer to that problem: crypto and other digital holdings that heirs cannot find, access, or value. So he earned the Certificate in Blockchain and Digital Assets (CBDA) to help families plan for this newest kind of wealth with the same care as everything else. He is writing a book on the subject of inheritance, When an Inheritance Becomes Your Legacy, for the parents who leave an inheritance and the children who receive one. You can read along as it takes shape in the monthly letter.
Away from the office, he is with his wife and their two young children, enjoying the magic of watching little humans become real people. He also tries to practice what he preaches: actually living out a well-built plan, not just writing plans for other people.
Wealth Management Analyst
Kimberly Melo
Every firm has a person who makes the machinery invisible. At TerraFirma, that is Kimberly. With 25 years in the industry, she coordinates everything that needs to happen between clients, their financial plan, and the custodian holding their accounts, ensuring things simply get done.
Account onboarding, transfers, distributions, beneficiary updates, and money movement all flow through her. Because she also partners with Jason to prepare financial plans, she knows the context behind every request, not just the task, but the long-term plan it serves.
She is usually the first voice clients hear when something needs doing, and the reason “we’ll take care of it” means it is already being taken care of.
